Module 10 Overview: Statistics

probability curves

Models and measurements are mathematical concepts that have a valuable use in real-life situations. How measures affect each other helps us develop models that we can apply to other incidences of a given situation.

For example, the number of hours you work determines the amount of your paycheck, and as your hours increase, so does your money! If we can determine the amount of increase, we can write a model to determine our pay for any amount of hours worked. Often we like to describe the behavior of numbers as well. If you get a list of grades for a class, that is great. But knowing the average or the percent that each grade represents of your whole grade tells you much more.

In this unit, we will look at variation models and study some statistical methods that can help us calculate and describe some of the real-life situations we encounter that can be described with numbers.
