Module 4: Bonding, Formula Writing, and Nomenclature

Chemical BottlesAuthentic Assessment IconChemical compounds exist in your home, and you use some of them on a daily basis. Some compounds are used as cleaning agents, some are used as food additives, some are used for plumbing, and others are used to heat your home. In this assignment, you will create special product labels for six various common household compounds. The labels will give the consumers information about the physical and chemical properties of the compound, while also conveying information on the compounds everyday use.

You will create labels for the following six compounds:

  • Ammonia
  • Sodium chloride
  • Calcium chloride
  • Copper
  • Freon
  • Methane

Before you begin, access the Chemical Compounds Template and Checklist to make sure that you include all of the items required for full credit. You will need to use resources outside of this course to complete this assignment, so please submit a Works Cited document with your assignment submission. If you need assistance, visit the Developmental Module for information on citing any resources that you use.

Using the template provided, each label should provide the following information about each chemical compound:

  • Chemical formula
  • Type of compound (ionic, molecular, metallic)
  • Polarity
  • Lewis dot structure
  • Solubility
  • Physical State at room temperature
  • Boiling point/freezing point
  • Storage information
  • Hazard statement (corrosive, flammable, irritant, etc.)
  • Precautionary statement (recommended measures in an emergency)
