Module 8: Tools for Survival

female student writing on a clipboardHigh school is a time of discovery, change, and enlightenment. In this module, you focused on some survival techniques that can help you successfully get through your high school career. While high school is a time that comes with many challenges and sometimes frustrations, this module has provided you with many useful tools that will help you overcome obstacles. Yet there are so many more survival techniques that you can add to your repertoire.

In this assignment, you will have the opportunity to create a survey, distribute it, and get results. Your survey will focus on finding out which tools or techniques are needed to be successful in high school. In addition, you must provide a written response addressing your results from the survey as well as what you have learned from the responses of your participants.

In order to begin, first select ten questions that focus on different survival skills or tools and arrange the responses so that the participant may answer on a scale of 1 to 4 with 1 representing "Ineffective" and 4 representing "Highly Effective." You may need to use resources outside of this course to complete this assignment. If so, please submit a Works Cited document. If you need assistance, visit the Developmental Module for information on citing any resources that you used. You may want to format your questions in the form of a statement. For example, a possible survey question might be:

Please circle your response on a scale of 1 to 4. Ineffective Somewhat Effective Adequately Effective Highly Effective
Use a digital calendar that will email or text reminders of important deadlines. 1 2 3 4

An important facet of surveys is the free response section that allows participants to reveal their thoughts on the topic along with additional information that could prove useful to your research. Be sure to include an open-ended question at the conclusion of your survey in order to collect additional advice from your participants that the survey questions might not account for. You may be pleasantly surprised by the insight you can gain from these candid reflections.

Once you have your survey designed, you must conduct the survey with at least twenty participants. Among this group, you should include at a minimum:

  • eight students (a mix of freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors)
  • five teachers
  • three guidance counselors
  • three parents
  • one administrator

After you have collected your data, it is time to analyze it and look for trends in the responses. How did the participants respond and what conclusions can you draw by looking at the results? Think about what you have learned from conducting this survey and then compose your results in a well-written discussion. You should include the responses to both the survey questions as well as the open-ended question and a reflection on what you have learned.

Remember to use accurate spelling, punctuation, and grammar. In addition, please type and format your discussion accordingly:

  • double-spaced
  • Times New Roman or Arial font
  • 12 point font size
  • 1 ½ pages in length

Before you begin, review the Survival Tools Survey Checklist to make sure that you include all of the items required for full credit.
