As you studied throughout this module, you found that writing effective persuasive essays is more of an art than anything else. You probably reviewed concepts you have learned in the past and hopefully you gained new insight into the process of writing. All good writers—amateurs to professionals—understand the importance of devoting adequate time to planning, outlining, drafting, and revising. Outlining provides a bridge between brainstorming and writing a rough draft. Creating an outline helps the writer get organized and stay structured around his or her thesis throughout the rest of the essay. In order to persuade an audience, writers have to incorporate evidence that is balanced, appropriate, and specific. Counterclaims anticipate an opposing argument, refute the logic, and strengthen an overall argument. Finally, conclusions serve an important function in the essay as they reinforce or call the audience to action. Writing is a process that you will continue to perfect through revision and practice.
