Throughout this module, you have explored the lives and literary works of many great British Romantics. However, Romanticism is an artistic movement that extended far beyond the borders of Britain. While the essential philosophy of Romanticism is the same across the globe, writers of each region applied their own perspectives and experiences to their versions of Romanticism.
For this assignment, you will have a chance to examine Romantic literature from across the globe by comparing and contrasting three Romantic writers. First, you will select a British writer from the Romantic period. It will likely be easier to choose an author that you have already studied, but you are welcome to choose one you have not explored yet. Next, you will select an American author from the Romantic period, keeping in mind that the period of Romanticism occurred slightly later and lasted longer than Romanticism did in Britain.
Finally, you will select a person who has created work reflective of Romanticism and is 1) an American or British Romantic from a later time period or 2) a Romantic from any other country or time period. Because the influence of Romanticism is still alive and instrumental in modern art, from film to TV shows to novels and even poetry, you should be able to recognize elements of Romanticism in creative works all around you. Likewise, you should also be able to identify elements of Romanticism in the literary works of writers from other countries, from Victor Hugo to José de Espronceda to Alexander Pushkin. While the events that influenced the literary works of writers from other countries will differ from the exact circumstances that cultivated Romanticism in Britain, you will still find many similarities among all literary works of Romanticism.
Examining these three creative Romantics that you have chosen, compare and contrast the lives and major works of the Romantics. In what ways are their works similar, and how do they differ? What important events occurred in each person's life that influenced their Romantic perspectives? Once you have thoroughly compared the three Romantics, you will present your findings and understanding of Romanticism in a presentation of your choosing. For example, you may choose to write an essay, create a multimedia presentation, design a webpage, record a podcast or video, create a poster, compose a pamphlet, or use another format of your choosing. However, be sure to include a brief biography of relevant events, at least one major work of Romanticism (novel, poem, film, etc.), and elements of Romanticism evident in the major works.
