Module 9: Amusons-nous!
When meeting or visiting friends, you likely talk about your interests, hobbies, likes, and dislikes. To have interesting conversations in the future, you will need to expand your French vocabulary. While you have already learned how to use -er verbs, in this module, you will also explore how to use regular -ir verbs, like choisir (to choose), and finir (to finish). Moreover, by the end of the module, you will have delved into information about the tropical island of Tahiti.
Getting Started
At this point in the course, you have encountered a lot of cognates, or words that look similar, and have the same meaning in both French and English. Take a moment to look at the list of activities below. Keeping in mind these are cognates, what do you think each phrase means?
- Jouer au baseball
- Faire du ski nautique
- Jouer au volley
- Jouer aux cartes
- Faire du théâtre
Now that you have determined the definition of each cognate, analyze their meanings. What words do you notice start the beginning of each phrase? You are correct if you said faire or jouer. You can infer, that when used with activities, both of these verbs mean "to play," and faire also means "to do," as you have previously learned.
