Authentic Assessment IconThree girls using a laptopNow that you have studied different types of conflicts that can occur in sports, you should be prepared to share information with others on how to best avoid or resolve conflict in a given scenario. For this assignment, you will work with your peers to develop a presentation about the content that you studied in this module. The presentation will be developed collaboratively with a group assigned to you by your instructor.

Collboration IconCollaboration occurs when two or more people work together toward a common goal. In this assignment, your team's goal is to create a 10-15 slide presentation demonstrating how to best avoid or resolve conflict on one of the scenarios assigned by your instructor.

Suggested scenarios include:

  • Scenario 1During a field hockey practice, the starting goalie is struggling to perform well. She continually lets in easy shots. The back-up goalie is frustrated and begins saying negative things about the starting goalie's play. The players begin arguing during practice.

  • Scenario 2The visiting baseball team has just hit a home run. The next batter steps up to the plate and the home-team pitcher appears to throw the ball directly at the batter. The batter races out to the pitching mound and confronts the pitcher. The two players push and shove each other. Both players are ejected from the game and suspended from the next game.

  • Scenario 3In the final moments of a basketball game, the home team is down by one point. The point guard from the home team drives the ball toward the basket, makes contact with the visiting-team defender, and misses the lay-up. Everyone from the home team feels the player was fouled, but the referee did not call the foul. The player confronts the referee and receives a technical foul. The home team loses the game.

  • Scenario 4During a soccer game, the coach selects a player to shoot a penalty shot that could determine the outcome of the game. The player the coach selects misses the shot. Another player on the team angrily yells, "Coach, you picked the wrong player to take that shot!" A heated conversation takes place between that player and the coach.

  • Scenario 5During a field hockey game, a player from the home team scores a goal and celebrates in an appropriate way directly in front of the visiting team’s spectator section. The spectators respond inappropriately. Both the player and spectators continue demonstrating poor sportsmanship for the remainder of the game.

Rather than dividing the assignment between members of your group, plan on setting up several sessions to discuss the content on the slides, which should include an introduction slide and a conclusion slide. Your presentation should be engaging, original, and clearly-designed so that your coursemates could understand it if you presented it to them, as you may be asked by your instructor to do so. If you need assistance on creating effective presentations, please visit the Developmental Module.

Each time you meet as a group, it may be helpful to assign the following role types within your group. Depending on the size of your group, one person may assume more than one role, or more than one person may assume one role. Make sure to reassign roles each time you meet so that each member of the group gets an opportunity to assume different responsibilities throughout the project.

  • Coordinator - this team member is responsible for setting the agenda of a meeting and coordinating any tasks.
  • Recorder - this team member is responsible for taking notes at a meeting.
  • Technical Support - this team member is responsible for addressing any technical concerns related to the assignment.
  • Researcher - this team member is responsible for undertaking any research related to the assignment.

After your presentation is complete, each member of your group should provide an individual response to the following questions. Make sure that your response is thoughtful and includes four to five sentences.

  • How can participating in sports help you develop the characteristics needed to respect others?
  • Why is it important for a team player to have conflict-resolution skills?
