Humans have made countless advancements in the way they live; however, some of those advancements have adverse effects on the ocean environment. For example, transportation has enabled humans to travel long distances, in essence making the world smaller and more accessible. The fossil fuels burned by vehicles emit pollutants that can contribute to global warming. Commercial and industrial fishing techniques bring more food and products made from fish to more people, but the mismanagement of it leads to overfishing in many areas of the ocean.
In an effort to protect the ocean, governments have set aside areas of the ocean as marine protected areas or marine sanctuaries. In addition, regulations have restricted commercial and industrial fishing and other types of human activity in ocean areas. You, too, can take steps to preserve the ocean by reducing the energy you use, the waste you generate, and by educating yourself and others.
