Research and brain imaging have revealed a lot about how the brain works, but many unexplained aspects still remain. With the use of EEG machines, scientists have gained clarity about many mysteries regarding sleep, yet research still cannot fully answer why we dream or why we really need sleep. Research also cannot explain how hypnosis potentially splits a subject's consciousness, or how it even takes place. In addition, drugs can alter consciousness, but why do some people’s brains become addicted more easily than others? Consciousness is unique to everyone; however, its existence proves tough to define.
