Module 10: State and Local Government
During this module, you learned that citizens can contribute to local government by participating in public meetings. Many city councils and school boards broadcast their meetings on a local television channel, as a live feed on their web page, or post them as videos on their web page. For this assignment, you will attend an upcoming meeting of your local city council or school board. You may choose to attend the meeting via television, internet, or in person.
While attending the meeting, take note of the issues that are presented to the council or board members and their responses to the issues. You will also need to create a seating chart to identify the members' seats, and if they were present or absent.
Before you attend the meeting, access the Local Government Meeting Form to make sure that you include all of the items required for full credit.
Reflection
After attending your local government meeting, consider the following questions and provide thoughtful responses.
- How did this experience impact your overall understanding of the process by which public policy is made and implemented?
- Describe ways that you could motivate other community members to take part in their local government by attending meetings.
Once you have completed your form and reflection, submit work to the dropbox.
Once you have completed this module, please complete the module test.
