Module Overview

South Asia

South Asia is located north of the Indian Ocean, on the Indian subcontinent. The region is separated from the rest of Asia by large mountain ranges. There are several mountain ranges, major rivers, and large seas located in this region. These physical features influence the climate. They also influence the local cultures and economies.

South Asia has supported some of the oldest known civilizations. Today, it is home to more than 1.5 billion people. The population is split between densely populated cities and remote villages. This has created a divide between urban and rural communities. The divide continues to grow as South Asia becomes more influential in the global community.
