Mohandas Gandhi, 1931

Starting in 1600, Britain controlled India. It ruled to become profitable rather than to support India. For more than one hundred years, the British hampered India’s economy. Hindus and Muslims started to oppose British rule. Their efforts for independence grew in the 1930s under the leadership of Mohandas Gandhi. Gandhi led through civil disobedience. Specifically, he used nonviolent means to disobey British laws.
