Cities and Urban Areas
Cities and Urban Areas Analysis

Once you begin your travels with GEOTREX, you will visit cities in a variety of sites and situations. Each city will have different functions and influences. This assignment will help you prepare for this experience as you analyze information about random cities.
First, choose three random international cities to analyze. You can do this by typing the phrase “random city list generator” into an Internet search engine. This type of website will select random cities for you. Alternatively, close your eyes and point to a random location on a world map or in an atlas. Then, answer the following questions about each city:
- Describe the site of this city. What physical characteristics, land features, or water features made this a good location to build a city?
- Describe the situation of this city. Is this city currently or historically near, around, or in a location that helped it thrive over time?
- Identify a current or historical function of this city. How does the city function in the region?
- Describe one way this city influences the area around it. Is it a cultural, economic, or education center for the region or country?
- Explain one urban issue this city is dealing with. Is there too much pollution, urban sprawl, or does it lack a transportation infrastructure?
