Cities and Urban Areas

St. Martin's Church in Landshut, Germany
Humans have formed permanent settlements since the agricultural revolution occurred about 12,000 years ago. Site and situation greatly influence the growth and development of a settlement. This includes small towns and massive metropolitan areas. A city may serve many functions for its residents, as well as the residents of the surrounding urban area. The functions of a city can also change over time. This could occur because of shifts in politics, technology, economics, or the environment. Cities have a major influence over their regions and countries because of their large size and permanent nature.
