Warm-Up

Take a moment to examine the map shown. This map depicts the major regions of the United States according to the U.S. Census Bureau. The U.S. Census Bureau classifies Virginia as a part of the Southern United States. However, there is debate over this classification. Some geographers consider Virginia part of the Northeastern United States. Others believe Virginia should belong to the Mid-Atlantic region that includes Maryland, Delaware, and Washington, D.C.
Would you classify Virginia as part of the South, the Northeast, or the Mid-Atlantic? Why? Is your classification based on physical, cultural, or economic factors?
