The Caribbean

Havana, Cuba
The Caribbean has a rich cultural heritage shaped by indigenous, African, and European influences. This specifically includes Spanish, English, French, and Dutch elements. They have become blended in different ways on different islands. As a result, the Caribbean contains a variety of unique cultures.
In some countries, agriculture, mining, and manufacturing make up a large part of the economy. However, many islands lack the natural resources needed to support these industries. Because of this, the Caribbean is largely dependent on tourism. This has had both positive and negative impacts on the region.
Extend Your Learning
GEOTREX is always searching for ways to bridge the past with the present. Take some time to research popular Caribbean music like calypso, reggae, and steel drum bands. GEOTREX would like you to contribute to a group playlist it will share with social media followers.
You can take part by posting a link to one of your favorite Caribbean songs in the discussion area. Include a one-sentence explanation about the song that will entice others to listen. Then, return to the discussion several times over the next few days to listen to your coursemates’ song selections.
