North Africa and Southwest Asia

The region of North Africa and Southwest Asia is situated where Europe, Africa, and Asia meet. This region is also known as the Middle East. The term Middle East was historically used by Europeans to describe the halfway point to Asia. Many feel that the term is Eurocentric, and can be confusing and vague. Because of this, geographers generally prefer to call the region North Africa and Southwest Asia.
Most countries in North Africa and Southwest Asia are united by three main characteristics. These include climate, language, and religion. Most countries in the region have a dry climate, speak Arabic, and practice Islam. For these reasons, North Africa has more in common with Southwest Asia than with the rest of Africa.
