Once humans began to settle and engage in agriculture, societies were better equipped to expand and meet basic human needs. In the Neolithic Era, humans created settlements and developed specialized skills like weaving and pottery. Although people during this time period still faced challenges from the environment, advances in shelters, community life, and food production made such difficulties easier to overcome. The remnants of these early settlements are studied today through valuable archaeological sites like Stonehenge, Aleppo, Jericho, and Çatalhöyök. The small size of these communities would later give rise to the larger civilizations you are familiar with today.
Extend Your Learning
In the application assignment, you created a Venn diagram to compare and contrast the Neolithic Era with modern times. Take the opportunity to extend your learning and add one more circle to your Venn diagram with the title Paleolithic Era. What are the similarities and differences between each of these three time periods? Compare your Venn diagram to a coursemate's.
