The Mongols

The Mongols were nomadic peoples who herded domesticated animals in the Asian steppe of modern-day Mongolia. They were constantly on the move in search of good pasture for their herds. On the one hand, the steppe was perfect for the Mongol way of life. Small groups of Mongols had seemingly endless space to roam, and they could trade with other nomads or with settled peoples on the border of the steppe. On the other hand, the openness of the steppe often left the Mongols vulnerable to battles over grasslands and water rights. Interestingly, the Mongols managed to defeat almost all other armies they fought, despite their small numbers. This was made possible because of factors including training that began at an early age, unmatched archery skills, strong discipline, and speed and endurance from warriors and horses.
