Persepolis

Remains of the Palace of Xerxes in Persepolis
Persepolis was the capital of the Persian Empire, and its ruins are located in modern-day Iran. The earliest structures in Persepolis date back to the early 500s B.C. (B.C.E.). Historians believe that Cyrus the Great selected the location of the city. However, it was under the rule of Darius I that many massive structures were built. The city contained ornate entrance gates, palaces, and tombs. The ruins of many such structures are present today.
