The mythology of ancient Rome was based on Greek mythology, and many of the Roman gods and goddesses were based on Greek deities. The ancient Romans used the stories of the gods and goddesses to explain everyday events, as well as out of the ordinary occurrences. The eight main gods and goddesses were Jupiter, Juno, Neptune, Minerva, Venus, Diana, Apollo, and Pluto.
