(B.C.E.), the Romans came into conflict with Carthage, a powerful city also trying to dominate the Mediterranean. The Carthaginians and Romans fought a series of three wars, named the Punic Wars. These wars began as a result of competition for trade in the Mediterranean Sea, and ultimately resulted in the destruction of Carthage and the expansion of trade and wealth for Rome.
