The location and geography of Russia shaped its development. Its treeless grasslands in the south appealed to nomadic herders, its forests in the north appealed to hunters, and its rivers offered opportunities for trade. By 1480 A.D. (C.E.), Russia had evolved into a major power and earned the nickname, "Third Rome." Its proximity to Constantinople and their trade relations meant that Byzantine culture had a large impact on the spread of Christianity into Russia, and Russian architecture and culture.
