The Franks and the Age of Charlemagne

The Coronation of Charlemagne by Raphael
The lineage of Charlemagne included powerful leaders like Clovis I and Charles Martel. These men were responsible for unifying the Franks and stopping the spread of Islam far into Europe. During the time Charlemagne ruled, he invested in public works throughout Europe, and ensured the preservation of Roman ideals and works. Charlemagne ruled in deference to the Church - so much so that the Pope crowned him emperor. Unfortunately, a civil war broke out after the death of Charlemagne, ending the strong central authority within the Frankish kingdom.
