Module 1: Expressions
Math in the Real-World
During this module, you learned how to use algebraic expressions to model real-world scenarios. For this assignment, you will create a total of six examples of real-world situations involving unknown values using the Math in the Real-World Template. Three problems should involve one unknown value and three problems should involve more than one unknown value. Make sure to include at least six different keywords and phrases in your assignment, as well as the algebraic expression to correctly model each scenario.
Next, choose two of the real-world situations that you created and assign replacement values that are appropriate for each situation. Evaluate the expressions for the given replacement values and explain the meaning of each answer as it relates to the scenario.
A sample problem is included in each section of the template to help guide you through this assignment.
Options to complete this assignment include the following:
- Download, print, and fill out the Math in the Real-World Template. Then scan the completed template and submit it to the dropbox.
- Download and fill out the Math in the Real-World Template using word processing software. Then submit it to the dropbox.
Before you begin, access the Math in the Real-World Checklist to make sure that you include all of the items required for full credit. You may need to use resources outside of this course to complete this assignment. If so, please submit a Works Cited document. If you need assistance, visit the Developmental Module for information on citing any resources that you used.
Reflection
After you have completed the assignment above, take a moment to reflect on the following questions. Respond to each of these questions in a brief four to five sentence paragraph.
- Is translating an algebraic expression to a verbal expression helpful in understanding its meaning? Why or why not?
- How has your understanding of math in the real-world changed now that you have modeled real-world situations using algebraic expressions?
Once you have completed the assignment and reflection, please submit your work to the dropbox.
