Module 11: Direct and Inverse Variation
Designing an App
Imagine that an educational software company hired you to develop the concept for a mobile or computer-based game application (or "app") that allows students to experience practical problems involving direct and inverse variations. You are asked to give them one example problem of direct variation and one example of inverse variation so they can see how the simulation would work. The idea is that students will be presented with a problem to solve. The app will provide "hints" in the form of steps to take to solve the problems. The app will also provide the step-by-step work that students will be able to view and check their progress during the simulation.
Use the Direct and Inverse Variations App Template to create your application proposal. Make sure to read through and complete each section of the template. You should also be sure your plan includes the following:
- A practical problem that represents direct variation; and
- A practical problem that represents inverse variation.
For each of these problems you must:
- Provide the algebraic expression of the problem;
- List the steps (to be used as hints) necessary to solve each of the algebraic expressions;
- Show the work for each of these steps (to be used for students to check their own work); and
- Show the final answer.
Before you begin, access the App Design Checklist to make sure you include all of the items required for full credit. You may need to use resources outside of this course to complete this assignment. If so, please submit a Works Cited document. If you need assistance, visit the Developmental Module for information on citing any resources that you used.
Reflection
After you have completed the assignment above, take a moment to reflect on the following questions. Respond to each of these questions in a brief four to five sentence paragraph.
- Describe a direct or inverse relationship that you have experienced or observed.
- Do you think resources like the app you designed are useful for people trying to learn new information? Why or why not?
- Have you ever used an app to better understand a subject? What was it like? Did you decide to use the app more than once? Why or why not?
Once you have completed this assignment and reflection, please submit your work to the dropbox.
