Sky Maps, Planispheres, and Planetariums

antiquated skymapUsing a planisphere is an essential tool in astronomy. Being able to use a planisphere allows you to identify constellations in the night sky. Knowing the constellations and their positions can be a helpful tool in navigation. It also allows you to identify the time of year it is. Sky maps allow you to observe changes in the night sky from month to month or season to season. Some sky maps are detailed enough to tell about the position of planets, and even comets! Planetariums allow you to experience the constellations with images that almost surround you in dome-shaped theater. The images of the constellations can even be set for a certain latitude so that you can see the stars as they would appear from specific locations on Earth. By using these tools, you can observe and study the stars, much like astronomers do.
