Module 3: Historical Astronomy

Social networking iconsAuthentic Assessment iconIn modern times, many people and organizations use social networking tools to communicate their personal messages and to attract people to their causes. These social networking tools allow people to show basic profile information, make timely comments, and display their affiliations with other people or groups. If some of the astronomers that you studied in this module were alive today, surely they would have used this powerful tool to let people know about their accomplishments and theories. What do you think they would have included on their profile pages? For this assignment, you should choose one of the astronomers that you studied in this module and design a social networking profile for him. Your page should include:

  • Your chosen scientist's name, place of birth, and date of birth;
  • A list of three to five friends or colleagues that he might link to from his page;
  • Two to three images that he would include on his page;
  • A list of other organizations or ideas that match his interests; and
  • Four comments that other people might leave on his page related to astronomy, his time period, or his life.

You can design your social networking profile page to mimic your favorite social networking website, or you can design your own webpage layout. Remember, this webpage will be used by your chosen scientist to boast about himself and his time period, so be creative! Before you begin, access the Astronomer Social Networking Profile Checklist to make sure that you include all of the items required for full credit. You may need to use resources outside of this course to complete this assignment.
