Space Telescopes

Hubble v. James Webb space telescopes

Space telescopes allow for a clearer and longer-range view of space since they sit above the Earth’s atmosphere that can interfere with ground telescopes’ view. These telescopes, though, come with a price tag for construction, launch, operation, and maintenance. Two notable telescopes are the Hubble Space Telescope, which is still in orbit, and the James Webb Space Telescope, which is under construction and expected to launch in 2018.

discussion iconPretend that NASA is experiencing such significant budget cuts that the administration has to decide on whether to halt the Hubble mission or stop construction on the James Webb Space Telescope. You and your coursemates have been asked to present your opinions via a course discussion.

Digital repository iconFirst, you need to do some background research. Take some time to compare and contrast the physical characteristics and the abilities of the Hubble Space Telescope and the James Webb Space Telescopes using the James Webb vs. Hubble interactivity from eMediaVA℠.

Once you have compared and contrasted the two satellites with the interactivity, use that knowledge as well as that you have gathered through this topic to decide which telescope mission should continue. You can only choose between halting the Hubble Space Telescope mission or construction on the James Webb Space Telescope. Post your answer to the discussion area and be sure to include examples and specific explanations that support your opinion. Return to the topic several times over the next few days to read your coursemates' posts. Reply to at least two of them, being sure to ask questions, and encourage further conversation.

Before you begin, review the Hubble Space Telescope or James Webb Space Telescope Rubric to make sure that you include all of the items required for full credit and that you understand how your posts will be graded. You may need to use resources outside of this course to complete this assignment, so please submit a Works Cited document with your assignment submission. If you need assistance, visit the Developmental Module for information on citing any resources that you used.
