Gas GiantsAs a group, the outer planets have a couple of different names. Some astronomers call them Jovian planets. Jove is an alternate name for the Roman king of the gods, Jupiter. The other planets past Jupiter were termed Jovian because they all appear to be "Jupiter-like." These planets are also known as the "gas giants" because they are mostly composed of gases.
