Cell Structure

Onion cells

Many cells combine to form the skin of an onion

Each organelle within a cell performs a specific function. In all eukaryotic cells, the organelles work together to help the cell function. Plant cells and animal cells contain many similar organelles, but they also have several differences. Single-celled organisms must perform the same functions that multicellular organisms perform. Instead of organ systems, the organelles in unicellular organisms work together to perform those functions and to maintain homeostasis.
