Along with physical traits, there are genetic disorders that can be inherited. Some genetic disorders are passed on in the simple dominant/recessive pattern described by Mendel, and others are passed on in more complex ways. In some occurrences, the chromosomes do not separate correctly, resulting in gametes that can have one copy of a type of chromosome, or three copies of a type of chromosome. Chromosome abnormalities can be detected by creating a karyotype, which allows scientists to study the number and structure of the chromosomes.
