Module 7: Organ Systems and Homeostasis

Imagine that you work for a government agency that educates the general public on health-related topics. Your job is to design a website layout about a disease that hospitals can use with their patients. You can choose a disease that affects one or more of the body systems you have learned about in this module, including the circulatory, respiratory, digestive, excretory, nervous, endocrine, immune, or lymphatic system.

The website layout must include the following items:

  • The name of the disease;
  • The body systems that are affected by the disease, including specific organs;
  • Signs and symptoms of the disease;
  • Risk factors (who is likely to get this disease);
  • Causes of the disease (pathogens, genetics, lifestyle choices, etc.);
  • Ways to reduce risk factors (prevention tips);
  • Treatment options and cures (if available);
  • Charts, graphs, and/or pictures with appropriate and relevant information;
  • Groups or nonprofit organizations that are affiliated with the disease; and
  • Contact information and/or other website(s) where additional information can be found.

Your website layout can be a single page webpage design, or you can design a "wireframe" for a website with more than one webpage. Make sure that your website layout is creative, well-designed, and easy to understand. Before you begin, access the Disease Website Layout Checklist to make sure that you include all of the items required for full credit. You will need to use resources outside of this course to complete this assignment, so please submit a Works Cited document with your assignment submission. If you need assistance, visit the Developmental Module for information on citing any resources that you use.

Options to create your website layout include the following:

  1. Hand-draw the layout and then take a picture of it for submission to the assignment’s dropbox.
  2. Hand-draw the layout and then scan it for submission to the assignment’s dropbox.
  3. Use a template in a word-processing, presentation, paint, or graphics program and utilize the software to create the layout. You can then submit your work to the assignment’s dropbox.
  4. Use a mobile or computer-based application to create a layout and email or export the final product for submission to the assignment’s dropbox.

Reflection

Once you have completed your website layout, take a few minutes to consider the following questions: Imagine that you have been diagnosed with a disease. What methods would you use to learn about the affects the disease could have on your body? How has learning about the structures and functions of your body systems given you greater insight on how a disease could affect you?
