Oxidation/Reduction Reactions

Chemistry DeskBefore the definition was broadened, oxidation and reduction were described as a gain or loss of oxygen. After a change in definition, the terms oxidation and reduction refer to a reaction where electrons are lost or gained. In an ionic reaction, there is a full loss or gain of electrons. In a molecular reaction, there is only a partial loss or gain of electrons. Oxidation and reduction always occurs simultaneously in redox reactions.
