Mendeleev and the Periodic Table

Periodic Table of Elements

In 1869, when Dmitri Mendeleev was organizing his version of the periodic table he wrote out each element's information on a separate card. Then, he organized the cards by atomic weight to create a periodic system or table, as it is known today. In this assignment, you will create one element card on any element of your choosing from the periodic table. Use the guidelines listed below to complete your element card.

On the front of your card, you will need to list:

  • The atomic number
  • The atomic symbol
  • The atomic weight

On the back of your card, you will need to list:

  • The family to which the element belongson the periodic table
  • The period and group number where the element is located on the periodic table
  • The scientist who discovered the element
  • Five additional defining characteristics or interesting facts about the element

Before you begin, review the Element Card Template and Checklist to make sure that you include all of the items required for full credit. You will need to use resources outside of this course to complete this assignment, so please submit a Works Cited document with your assignment submission. If you need assistance, visit the Developmental Module for information on citing any resources that you use.
