Assimilation comes in many forms and for different reasons. Although assimilation is done in order to fit-in or as a form of survival, there are consequences. One consequence of assimilating is losing one’s self. In this topic, you viewed two different author’s perspectives on assimilation. Santhna Rama Rau resisted assimilation during a time when India was protesting for independence from Britain. Pat Mora’s speech described how important it is not to lose your cultural heritage. Those who assimilate, if not careful, gradually let go of the connections they have to their culture. Assimilation may seem necessary at times to progress, but it should never define who you are.
