Module 5: Obstacles on the Road to Self-Discovery

Maybe your school could benefit from a video game club? Maybe it could benefit from a fashion club? Is your school missing any sports, like lacrosse? While many schools offer a wide variety of sports, clubs, and organizations, not all students are always interested with the choices offered.

In this module, you focused on the art of persuasion and rhetoric. You investigated examples of effective use of persuasion and rhetoric from well-known and respected people and texts.  In this assignment, try your best to convince the leaders of your school that an organization or club should be included in your school by designing an informative webpage.

You must first decide what organization or club should exist in your school. What is your school missing? What are students interested in that is not represented by an already existing club or sport? This organization can be academic, athletic, or artistic. There are many possibilities, but remember, you can only pick one club or organization for the webpage design.

To start this webpage, you will need to conduct research. Research should be used in order to show that there is a need for it within your building as well as community. You will want to show how your organization will have a positive impact on the school life/community.

You must also include the following information about your organization on your webpage:

  • Mission statement and purpose
  • Persuasive advertisements to get individuals to join your club/organization
  • Information on when and where meetings/activities will be held
  • The name of the proposed sponsor
  • Benefits of joining the club or organization
  • Challenges in starting the club or organization
  • Time-frame for starting the club
  • Resources and costs

The writing on your webpage needs to include the elements of rhetoric in order to persuade the leaders of the school to approve the organization. Your persuasive writing will also convince members to join. For the webpage, you must develop appropriate descriptions and graphics/photos that illustrate your organization. Your webpage can be a mock-up or design document of the webpage; it does not need to be a fully functioning webpage. It should include both text and graphics. The webpage should be well-organized.

Before you begin, review the Webpage Design Checklist to make sure that you include all of the items required for full credit. You may need to use resources outside of this course to complete this assignment. If so, please submit a Works Cited document. If you need assistance, visit the Developmental Module for information on citing any resources that you used.

Options for creating your webpage include:

Take this time to write a brief reflection paragraph and elaborate on how having the skills of persuasion will serve as a lifelong benefit. Record your reflection on a separate document from your webpage design.
