The Modernist Short Story
Memorial statues and monuments are often erected to honor important historic figures. One of the most famous memorial statues in the United States is that of Abraham Lincoln; the giant marble statue is located within the Lincoln Memorial in the nation's capital. William Faulkner, whose literature you have read in this topic, also has a memorial statue in Oxford, Mississippi. Faulkner's bronze statue is seated on a park bench. Memorial statues are often accompanied by a plaque with an inscription that addresses the life and accomplishments of the honorary figure.
If you could design a commemorative statue for one of the characters in the fiction that you read in this topic, would you create one for Emily in Faulkner's story or Phoenix in Welty's story? What would the statue look like? What would it be made of, and how big would it be? For this assignment, choose one of the protagonists from "A Rose for Emily" or "A Worn Path" and design a memorial statue to that character just as if she were a real person.
Options to create your statue design include the following:
- Hand-draw the assignment and then take a picture of it for submission to the assignment's dropbox.
- Hand-draw the assignment and then scan it for submission to the assignment's dropbox.
- Utilize a paint, publishing, word processing, presentation, or graphics software program to create the assignment.
- Use a mobile or computer-based application to create an image or document. Then, email, screenshot, or export the final product for submission to the assignment’s dropbox.
While your statue design must be your own unique creation, remember to cite your source if you base your design on another image. To accompany your statue, please design a plaque and write an inscription that describes the character, her life, and why she is being honored. Be sure to include the plaque in the same document as your statue design. You may need to use resources outside of this course to complete this assignment.
