Memoir as Nonfiction and Poetry
In this topic, you have studied the characteristics of the literary nonfiction form of memoir and explored how it can become poetry. Now it is your turn to write a memoir poem. Take a moment to think about a single event of your life that is memorable to you and translate that recollection into a poem.
Your memoir poem should fulfill the following criteria:
- Share a single memory from an event in your life
- Be written in a first-person point of view (i.e., from the point of view of the speaker)
- Contain at least fourteen lines
Your memoir poem can have a defined rhyme scheme, meter, or structure if you feel that is the best form for your poem, but you are welcome to experiment with free verse or other creative elements. Before you begin, review the Memoir Poem Checklist to make sure that you include all of the items required for full credit.
