Incorporating Evidence and Counterclaims

female student with a laptop You will need more than an arguable claim in order to persuade an audience to accept your viewpoint or take a specific action. To convince an audience, you need evidence to support your claim. You must provide readers with facts that prove what you say. Evidence can take the form of indisputable facts, statistics, definitions, expert testimony, analogies, or examples. The way you incorporate and explain the connection of this evidence to your claim will make or break your argument. It is also wise to address and discuss counterclaims and opposing viewpoints while systematically rebutting, or negating, the opposition. Give your readers the full picture, and you will be more likely to persuade them and prove your point.
