Contemporary Connections – Thematic Recurrence

student research and using computerThroughout this module, you have learned about The Crucible and its allegorical parallel between the Red Scare of the 1950s and the Salem Witch Trials. What other events in history or today mirror the events, hysteria, and themes of The Crucible?

Select an event from history or the present that you believe parallels the events or themes of The Crucible. Of course, you cannot select the Salem Witch Trials or the Red Scare. After conducting research on the event, summarize the main points of the event for your classmates and teacher. Your summary of the event should answer the 5W/H questions (who, what, when, where, why, and how of the event). Then, explain the parallel or similarity between this event and the themes found in The Crucible. Your summary should include two to three paragraphs.

Possible events to research include:

  • The persecution of Jews during the Holocaust
  • Japanese American internment camps in World War II
  • Tiananmen Square Protests of 1989
  • Treatment of Muslims after 9/11
  • Genocides in: Congo, Darfur, Kosovo, Croatia, or Bosnia
  • Or any other event of your choosing
