Motif and Theme

Before learning about and considering the themes developed by Hurston or Steinbeck in their novels, take a moment to consider and reflect on the example themes below. Read each of the statements and decide if you agree or disagree with each one. Why do you feel the way you do? Is there anything that you have read in your selected novel that influenced your opinion.

  1. It is important to own land.
  2. Loneliness can make a person physically ill.
  3. I have a responsibility to help my friends, family, and neighbors even if they are not able to take care of me in return.
  4. I define "success" as wealth. If I am rich, then I am successful.
  5. I believe euthanasia is sometimes necessary.

  7. Since the 1930s, life has significantly improved for women, African Americans, the elderly, and people with disabilities.
  8. The best path to freedom is to secure wealth.
  9. People who are visitors in another land should have the same privileges as do permanent residents.
  10. Farming remains a viable and essential occupation today.
