An Introduction to British Literary Periods

TimelineArtist IconMuch has happened in British history and literature over the past fifteen hundred years. Now that you have explored an introduction to the literary periods in Britain, you will create a timeline that illustrates many of the major events that historians use to define the periods. In the table below, you will find 13 different events listed. You should organize the events in chronological order on your timeline. Each event should include a short description, an appropriate date, and an appropriate label and image corresponding to the event.

Be creative and make sure to illustrate the different events accordingly. You can design your timeline horizontally, vertically, or in another format, as long as it is well-organized.

Your timeline should include the following events:

  • Anglo-Saxon Period
  • Medieval Period
  • Renaissance Period
  • Neo-Classical and Restoration Periods
  • Romantic Period
  • Victorian Period
  • Modern Period
  • Post-Modern Period
  • Old English was used
  • Conquest of England by William of Normandy
  • Age of Enlightenment
  • King Charles II restored to the throne
  • Invention of the printing press with moveable type
