Writing Focus – Selecting a Topic and Developing a Thesis

When you chat with your friends, it is likely that you and your peers have varied opinions on different issues. There are plenty of controversial issues debated in the world today. Turn on any news program, open a newspaper, or log on to a news website with your computer or mobile device, and you will find an unlimited amount of coverage arguing one side of an issue over another. Take ten to fifteen minutes to consider at least three different topics that are of interest to you. Then, list these topics in your journal and use one to two sentences to answer the following questions about each:

• Do you have a strong opinion about the topic?
• What is your opinion?
