Ranging in subject matter and style, Victorian poetry resists being neatly characterized in a simple and definitive manner. The Victorian era offered a wider readership for women writers than previous eras. While religion and faith played prominent roles in Victorian poetry, so too did social responsibility, love, and philosophical thought. Often seen as a bridge between the Romantic and Modern eras, Victorian poetry reflected the changing times and varied schools of thought that were developing as a result of religion and philosophy clashing with scientific developments.
