Poetry in the Modern Period

journal iconstudent writingAccess and read the poem "Digging" by Irish poet Seamus Heaney. In a journal entry, write a personal response to the poem. There are many ways you can respond to a poem. Here are a few possibilities, but feel free to branch out and do something different if you like.

  • You can comment on what you thought the purpose of the poem was.
  • You can talk about how the poem makes you feel.
  • If the poem gives you an idea for a poem of your own, you can start writing one.
  • You can comment on the tone of the poem.
  • You can talk about why you liked or disliked the poem.
  • If the poem reminds you of something, you can write about that.
