Module 2: Short Stories

Assessment iconNow that you have learned about all of the elements that make up an effective short story, it is time for you to create your own. Using one of the prompts below, or your own idea, you will create a short story that includes all of the different literary techniques that you studied in this module. As you create your short story, make sure to implement all of the steps to the writing process that you previously learned.

Your short story should be at least five paragraphs in length, and it should include the following items:

  • A clearly-defined plot which includes an exposition, rising action, a climax, falling action, and a resolution;
  • A theme;
  • A central conflict or problem;
  • Well-developed characters; and
  • Descriptive words related to tone and mood.

Your short story should be engaging and well-organized. It should use descriptive words and communicate the story that you intend to tell, but also be entertaining for the reader. Make sure to proof your short story for any spelling and/or grammar errors.

Suggested Short Story Prompts

  • One day as I was leaving school...
  • It started with a can of soup...
  • When I saw the star...
  • The day that it disappeared...
  • You may also suggest a prompt and submit it for approval to your instructor.

Before you begin, access the Short Story Rubric so that you understand how your assignment will be graded. If you use resources outside of this course to complete this assignment, please submit a Works Cited document. If you need assistance, visit the Developmental Module for information on citing any resources that you used.

Reflection

Do you prefer reading short stories or longer works? Why? How do you think reading short stories helps to build your understanding of literary genres? In a digital document separate from your short story, compose four to five sentences responding to these questions.

Once you have completed your short story and your reflection, please submit your work to the dropbox.
