Grammar - Direct and Indirect Objects

Did You Know?:
Transitive vs. Intransitive Verbs

Think About iconNot all verbs take an object. Before you explore direct and indirect objects, you need to examine how verbs can be transitive or intransitive. Transitive verbs require one or more objects. For example:

She carried a basket.

Without the object of "basket," the verb would not make sense. Intransitive verbs do not take an object. For example:

He slept.

Without an object, the sentence still makes sense. You should note that there are some verbs that can be transitive and intransitive. Some of those verbs include eat, cheer, run, sing, trip, visit, and many more.
