As part of a study of poetry, scholars will study a poem for a variety of techniques and elements. Now that you have all of the skills that you need to analyze a poem, you will do just that in the first part of this assessment. Using the poem "Her Kind" by Anne Sexton and the Poetry Analysis Organizer, you will need to look for all of the elements of poetry that you studied in this module. Some of the items listed below will be present in the poem, while some of them will not be. Make sure to read the poem thoroughly a few times before you begin to analyze it. You should use some of the active reading strategies that you learned earlier in this course while you read. Once you have read the poem, you should analyze it for the following elements:
Figurative Language | Sound Devices |

In addition to analyzing the poem for figurative language and sound devices, you should also try to determine the theme of the poem.
Part B: Poetry Composition
Now that you have had the opportunity to evaluate a poet's work, you will create your own poem. For this part of the assignment, you will need to create a sonnet addressing a topic of your choice. Remember, sonnets are typically fourteen line poems with a strict structure and rhyme scheme. They are composed of two parts - an octet, or a section with eight lines, and a sestet, or a section with six lines. Sonnets usually use iambic pentameter as their meter.
As part of your poem, you will need to include figurative language and sound devices. From the list of these items provided in Part A, you should choose at least three types of figurative language and two sound devices. Use both figurative language and sound devices to enrich your poem, and to make it meaningful for you and the reader. Before you begin, access the Original Sonnet Rubric to make sure that you include all of the items required for full credit.
Reflection
At the beginning of this module, you used an interactivity to articulate your ideas about poetry. Do you still agree with the choices you made? How have your feelings about poetry changed throughout your completion of this module? In a digital document , compose four to five sentences responding to these questions.
