Narrative Nonfiction

student readingIn libraries and bookstores, books are often categorized as either fiction or nonfiction. Many bestseller lists come in two versions: one that ranks fiction books and another that ranks nonfiction books. In addition, recipients of prestigious writing awards are grouped into separate fiction and nonfiction categories.

How do you explain the apparent need to differentiate between fiction and nonfiction writing? Do you think the distinction between fiction and nonfiction is important? Why or why not? Do you have a preference for either fiction or nonfiction books, or do you feel the same way about both? What is it about fiction or nonfiction writing that appeals to you?
